Tsunamis
Most tsunamis are caused by earthquakes. The rubbing between the subducting plate and the dominant plate is huge. This rubbing prevents a slow and steady rate of subduction and keeps the two plates from becoming "stuck". The stuck plates descend into the mantle causes a slow bend in the overriding plate. The result is a buildup of energy similar to the energy stored in a packed in spring. Energy can build up in the overriding plate over a long period of time. The overriding plate snaps back into a wild position. This motion is the cause of the tsunami.

And the chapter two test is Tuesday the 26th. the big earthquakes today were a 5.0 magnitude in the south Pacific Ocean, a 5.0 on the Indonesian island of Sumatra, and 3.7 and 3.8 on the Alaskan island of Kodiak. See ya.

Hey, its shayna.
Okay here's the weather for today, Sunday: 65 degrees fahrenheit, and its sunny, and its 33% humid, and the wind is coming from the southwest direction at 9 mph. The homework due monday was 2.1 packet, 2.1 vocab cards, and 2.2 RNV. There have been about 900 earthquakes in the past week in the United States. So that's kinda a lot but they clearly haven't been very noticeable. I hope you have a good Sunday! --Shayna

Hi ya'll. This sandwich looks tasty. It is a miserable Monday Quatro de Mayo in KC. It was 69 degrees the whole day, and it was humid, but no rain. Slater and I played basketball with the 3rd graders at lunch. Today, Mr. Welton was on his Arizona trip with the sevies, so our substitute was Mr. Altshul. We all started cutting up and decorating our globes. Note: Do NOT use a scalpel to cut through styrofoam. Anyway, we got out of class five minutes early. I looked on usgs.gov. Today there was a 5.2 magnitude earthquake in the Pacific Solomon Islands as well as a 5.9 later in the day, a 5.6 in Indonesia and Papua New Guinea, a 5.3 in Miranda, Venezuala, a 4.6 in the Flores Sea by Indonesia, and a 4.2 in the Fox Islands in the Aluetian Island area in Alaska. The biggest e
arthquake of the week was a 6.2 in Guatamala. A picture of the damage down by the Guatamalan earthquake

Jacob's Blog
Today in class we learned about sea floor spreading in a lecture and worked on a worksheet towards the end of class. Sorry Mr. Welton for us talking during class... The good news is that the weather has been improving and today has been sunny and nice.

It's Avery!!

Hello. Today is Monday. The weather for today is....46 degrees fahrenheit, and it has rained. Last night it rained a lot, it was a storm, with thunder and lightning. The wind is coming from the north at 17 mph. It is 99% humid, the dew point is 46 degrees fahrenheit, and the pressure is 30.10 in. Today in class we had a lecture until we got in trouble and then we worked on our worksheet. Also, that picture is Pangaea, aka what it looked like when all the continents were connected. We got quite a lot of homework. We had 1.5 RNV, that worksheet, 2 1-page papers on 2 articles on plate tectonics from sciencedaily.com, you need supplies for tomorrow i think, and there is a test on Thursday. So you should study, because that's the ticket! :) According to usgs.gov, in the past week there has been 170 earthquakes. That's a lot! If you have not noticed, there has been no earthquakes in Kansas. So I think that's about it. Oh, also "that's what she wrote" is my new phrase. It's okay if you don't understand it, neither do i. Remember, that's the ticket- Avery.

Sarahs Blog again

So today is sunday....sorrry i was suppost to blog friday but when i got home after our car diego died shabbas had already started. So there was no time to blog because it was Shabbas. So today it was really overcast, i mean really overcast. The clouds dominated. Right now we are under a tornado warning or watch not sure but im scared. :o So anyways, according to the website (the one we had to look for earthquakes)
http://earthquake.usgs.gov
The Richter magnitude scale was developed in 1935 by Charles F. Richter of the California Institute of Technology as a mathematical device to compare the sizes of earthquakes.
Also according to the web site there have been 171 earthquakes today. WHAT A LOVELY FACT DONT YOU THINK?!!
Also i went to this J-serve community service thing today. I was very dissapointed to not see anyone from the class there! If you recall Mr. Welton last year you gave exrta credit for those who went. I think that i should so get extra credit. FYI it was very fun.
So peace out home dizzles for shizzles this has been a good blog. WORD.

Monday, April 20, 2009

Hey guys its Sam and today is the first day back at school, monday april 20. This sandwich above indeed looks appetizing. Anyway, today we did not get our tests back, but we were assigned a project in our new geology textbooks to make a scaled 3-d depiction of Earth' s crust, mantle and core. Today, groups of three were told to come up with a materials list, gameplan, and sketch for the project. I obviously did not do any drawing. I checked usgs.gov to look to the latest earthquake news and today there was a magnitude 4.7 off the coast of northern Japan bordering Russia, a magnitude 5.3 off the coast of South Korea and Japan, a magnitude 4.9 in Venezuala, a magnitude 5.5 in the Indonesian region of Banda Sea, and within the last hour there was a magnitude 5.4 earthquake that hit the South Pacific island of Tonga. The weather in Leawood is in the mid-sixties after a cold forty degreee start to the day. Now the sun is shining with scattered clouds as we are looking at no precipitation and 70 plus degree weather throughout the week. Cool beans, see you in two weeks.

Damage done by a recent Japanese earthquake.

Dear All,
These burgers look tasty.
Today is a splendid journey in the glorious continuation of our splendid lives. It snowed on Saturday but melted quickly, and at 12:30 on Monday it is 55 degrees farenheit. I went driving yesterday and did not hit anything! So for all of the bridges people who missed today, our packet on Ert was due today, and we had a concept map and vocabulary to do in class, but no homework. We got tot watch a little of Toy Story. In Geometry we have the 8-1 and 8-2 worksheet, and 8-1 and 8-2 book homework due wednesday that will take forever. We got our Chapter 13 Test and Golden Rectangle Essay grades handed back. So that's it I guess. Cool beans.

Hello this is Sarah...........Herman

Okay so today is friday as always. The holy shabbas is here. So today was very different. In the morning it was very warm but as the day progressed it started to get colder and colder. It did not rain, snow or sleet today however there was a major wind. For example, today i was sitting on my apple valley sign texting kara and i got cold. So i had to go inside and get a blanket. So yes in conclusion that story descibes the weather. Since its my sisters birthday on Sunday, for a birthday present we got a web cam.!!!
With much love, Sarah

Monday, March 16th

Yo! This sandwich looks tasty. Today is Monday, and we finally got Mr. Welton's Smart Board working! Also his daughter came to our class. We watched a global warming video narrated by Alec Baldwin. Today we got a 5 page 4.1 section packet. It is mostly about the Earth's rotation, precipitation, and the seasons. I can't wait to work on it! Otherwise, no other homework. Today it is a beautiful 64 degrees Fahrenheit in Overland Park. 8th grade runs the mile tomorrow! Sarah and I have the most watched class weather rap on Youtube! cool beans.
The two articles and summaries that Mr. Welton asked for

http://www.thecrimson.com/article.aspx?ref=527196
Basicaly that article was about how scientists were finaly able to link headaches to hot weather. They told about how patients that had a lot of headaches in the winter did not have them in the summer. And also the raise of pollution has raised the amount of headaches.
This article is about the preparation for the rain season (spring). They have gotten ready one million sand bags to help with flooding when it starts. They expect flooding all over the United States.

Heeeeeeeeeeeeeyyyyyyyyyyy it's shayna!!
Hey, it's Shayna, here to blog on Sunday night. I am going to give you all the weather for Overland Park, KS, where I happen to live. It is 54 degrees Fahrenheit, and it feels like it. Haha, also, it is partly cloudy. Wind: From SE at 6 mph. Humidity: 61%. Pressure: 29.98 in. Dew Point: 41 degrees Fahrenheit. Visibility: 8.0 miles. Thank you, weather.com for this information. Um, we didn't really have homework. Oh, unless you got an extension on your science project, then that needs to be done. Also, soon we're gonna be starting geology stuff. Geologists studies rocks, therefore geology is the study of rocks. In other news, Jacob had his Bar Mitzvah and he did well at the service. The party was also enjoyable except some people were annoying, but I'm not going to speak of that. Today I helped Rachel and Jacob film and that was enjoyable. I ate thin mints and stuff. It was fun. And now I'm home and I get to write a poem about any type of storm. I am going to write about a rainstorm. Just rain, nothing else. I love you all--Shayna.
P.S. I didn't put a picture of rain because it is raining, I put a picture of rain because I am going to write about rain for English class...

Today in science we presented our videos for the science fair (except for Talia...). Here are the youtube links for all our videos
Heatwave, Heatwave, For the Land- Michael and I
Weather Rap- Sarah and Sam
Weather Rap- Daniel and Shani
Levery and Polina's is not on youtube.
Here is the original weather rap- Partly Cloudy- The Rap
We also watched lots of other funny youtube videos. Like when Shani put a hamster in Ben's mouth and he woke her up by putting it on his face... hilarious.
It got much colder outside. The warm weather was so nice but it seems like it's winter again.
Sorry the picture is so big... just click on it to see the whole thing.

This looks very tasty. Hi, my name is Sam "Awesome sauce" Abrams, and I am here to report on 4th Period 7/8 Science with mr. Welton. Today, we are continuing to record the weather variables, as well as patterns for the continental U.S. I recommend just looking at the back of the Kansas City Star's Sports Section. Today our storms packet was due, and we must do 3.3 RNV for homework. We got our tests back, and we rocked the socks off of the other class (not really). Sarah would have gotten an A had she flipped the numbers of her test score (69). Good day to be freezing.

YAY!!! It's sunday :)

Hey it's Shayna. So, as you know, it's sunday, my turn to blog. And right now, outside my house in Overland Park, it is 21 degrees Fahrenheit. It feels like 11 degrees though, it's pretty sunny though, so that's nice. The wind is blowing from the North at about 8 mph. The humidity is apparently 48% and the dew point is 7 degrees. Thank you to weather.com for this lovely information. I did go outside though and it was a bit chilly, not a good idea to go outside with socks on, still cold on your feet. Of what I hear/see there is still enough snow to make a little snowman, and that's always fun. Supposedly there is a packet that's due about storms but I personally was not there on Thursday to witness this packet. Also, there's some new project but I'm guessing we haven't learned but about it yet, I just know my partner is Talia. I spent my Sunday morning and afternoon working at Harvesters for Mitzvah Day at KI, fyi. But now I'm putting all my sister's cds on my Itunes. Oh by the way (btw), the girls' lost their basketball tournament and Shira got MVP, they come home tonight, unless they're snowed in, I might be going to the airport. I would also love to recommend the movies Hot Chick, Juno, and Definitely, Maybe. I watched all of those yesterday, Juno has the best soundtrack. Peace, love, apple jacks, Shayna.

Today is my first blog (accidentally- I forgot before). Today in class we did a lab on tracking hurricanes and for homework/classwork we have a packet on storms. We didn't do much else in class.
It rained earlier today, and there is 90% humidity as I'm posting this. The clouds are stratus and cover the whole sky. There is not much wind and the temperature is 16 degrees Celsius.

Tomorrow's future blog
Tomorow there will be a 100% chance of weather. In Mr. Welton's class we will probably learn things as well as do stuff. And now you know Tomorrow.
Hi, it's shayna....
Okay, i was supposed blog Sunday but I forgot so I will now and say what happened on Sunday. On Sunday, the high was 39 degrees fahrenheit and the low was 23 degrees fahrenheit. It did not precipitate on Sunday. It was kinda cold if you ask me, but I just wore a light grey jacket and jeans. Not like really wintery but I don't mind the cold. Anyway! We're supposed to be doing the weather project where you record the weather and everything so if you haven't then you're kind of in trouble. But for the weekend we didn't have to record it, so don't worry. Then, by the way (btw) we have a test on Tuesday. Just putting it out there. This is a great blog entry, I think I will add some pictures, even though I know I won't get full credit since I posted late, this is fun anywayyys.
Okay, that is a picture of a cold thermometer but it really wasn't extremely freezing. But you know, it was cold.
Thanks for reading this blog, I hope it was informative of Sunday and everything really. Dont forget, I heart you. (haha i crack myself up)--Shayna

Hi guys. Today is Monday, President's Day, and it is a cold dry day. Our weather tabulating project, with the graphs and presentation is due on the 26th of February. Also, the packet on the energy in the Earth's atmosphere is due on Tuesday, I think. It is really fun to learn about the energy at the Earth's surface, and the reflection of solar radiation. Today Maggie's girls varsity team lost, but it is okay. Yesterday, KU pulled off a win at K-State! For the science tabulating project, you should research the subjects of wind speed, wind direction, percentage of cloud cover, temperature, air pressure, humidity, and type and amount of precipitation. Cool beans.
p.s. I tried to post a picture or video on this blog, but don't understand the technology. But I tried!

Hey fellow science pimps its Avery,
Today we didn't have science class. Instead we went to the Nelson Atkins and practiced our "D" words. It was Delightful! My favorite piece was woman #4. Words to describe it: Distorted, Dangerous, and Menopause... Don't forget to finish the packet about radiation and stuff that's due tomorrow. The weather today was wet and crappy but I heard that it might turn into snow tonight or tomorrow. What else... Oh! Have a lovely valentines day. Get it? LOVELY? cause its like valentines day? I know I'm hilarious, no need to thank me. Unless you thank people by giving them money. Then you can thank me. Anyways have a great 3 hours and 41 minutes of Wednesday and see you guys tomorrow.

hi everyone this is lavery, its not my turn to blog I just wanted you to all notice the welcome laser thing i put in the corner of the blog. I think that if we want to catch up to the other class we should add cool graphics like that. Maybe a hit counter or different background or something. Something to spice it up a little bit.
Sarah's Blog!

Today, there was still snow on the ground. Personally i think the snow is mocking me... just laying there and not giving us a snow day. Snow THAT IS JUST MEAN! As of 4:11 its 34 degrees outside. And is partly cloudy. We also have homework that is 2.1 and 2.2 reading notes and vocab. Yeah........with much love SARAH HERMAN!!!!!!!!! I heart science

Daniel's First Blog YEAH

Hey this is daniel as you can see above this is my first blog. Today we took our science chapter 1 test in the weather book. We all hoped for a snow day but were disappointed as the weather man lied yet again. Today it was an icy morning with winds of around 10 kilometers per hour coming from the Southeast. THIS BLOG WILL NOW BE BETTER THAN THE OTHER CLASS.

Science Today Polina
Hi this is Polina
So today we had presentations from some of the people in the class and we got most of the people done. Our homework is to study for the test that is tomorrow and if you haven't finished your presentation you need to finish that and any late assignments are due tomorrow. The weather is cold and it was supposed to snow but it never did. I hope that we have a snow day tomorrow (if it snows). So yeah.
Bye

SAM ABRAMS IS THE BEST BLOGGER IN 8th GRADE SCIENCE HISTORY!!
I sit here writing, humbled at being the first blogger in the history of Mr. Welton's class blog. Today, Thursday January 22nd, we continued learning about the different layers of Earth's atmosphere, and air pollution. He checked our 1.3 RNV and 1.4 worksheet deal. He also assigned a chapter worksheet for homework, and also gave us a study guide for the "exam" on tuesday. Our weather recording project presentation is due monday, and we are still working on our global warming defense for the tu bshvat deal. Cool beans.
